Now 25, Kate, from Northumberland, uses a wheelchair most of the time to get around. She describes herself as an ambulatory wheelchair user, which means that she is able to take some steps but needs her wheelchair to help ease fatigue and pain. Kate has danced since she was a child and is now teaches ballet from her wheelchair, and she was asked to show her skills in the ad.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Kate tells Metro.co.uk: \u2018Having disabled role models and people on screen is one way that we can start both talking, and understanding, more about disabilities. \u2018Now we are starting to break these stigma\u2019s with disabled models, it was definitely time to show an ambulatory wheelchair user. \u2018There are a huge group of ambulatory wheelchair users out there, me included, who get discriminated against every day. \u2018From getting out the car to transfer to a wheelchair and being told we don\u2019t need that blue badge space, to hearing people snigger if we stand up out of our wheelchair to reach an item on our shelf, it\u2019s time to stop the hate and increase the understanding.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1142\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1142\" style=\"width: 540px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1142 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/lavyon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Wheelchair-dance-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"810\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lavyon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Wheelchair-dance-1.jpg 540w, https:\/\/lavyon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Wheelchair-dance-1-150x225.jpg 150w, https:\/\/lavyon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Wheelchair-dance-1-300x450.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1142\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kate is featured both in and out of her wheelchair in the ad (Picture: George at Asda)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u2018Being an ambulatory wheelchair user, in general, is difficult; some days I can\u2019t even get out of bed to use my wheelchair but on other days, I can walk short distances. \u2018I hope that this can be the start of a movement where it\u2019s \u2018ok\u2019 to move. \u2018It\u2019s ok to get out your chair, if you can, and hopefully, people will start understanding better too.\u2019 Kate has been modelling for a few years with Zebedee Management \u2013 a company that focuses on representing people with disabilities and differences \u2013 but this is one of her biggest jobs so far. Seeing the adverts come out has been particularly poignant for Kate as she was unwell during the shoot. For the video, she danced for two minutes \u2013 the most she had done for 11 years. But later that afternoon, she collapsed on the bathroom floor and was unable to do any more filming, before flying home the following day.
