Provide your sick household member with clean disposable facemasks to wear at home, if available, to help prevent spreading COVID-19 to others. Clean the sick room and bathroom, as needed, to avoid unnecessary contact with the sick person,\u201d the CDC advises.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the meantime, health officials are continuing to urge people to stay at home if they are sick, work from home if possible, and keep up everyday preventative actions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This includes always covering coughs and sneezes with a tissue, washing hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, and sanitizing touched surfaces and objects daily using regular household detergent and water. If soap and water are not available, hand sanitizer that contains 60% alcohol can be used.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The contagious virus, which first emerged in Wuhan, China, in December, was characterized as a pandemic by the WHO on Wednesday. A health situation reaches the pandemic level when there\u2019s \u201clarge-scale severe disease or deaths\u201d as well as \u201cuncontained global spread of the virus,\u201d according to WHO Director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The illness has spread to at least 114 countries, infecting at least 124,000 people and killing at least 4,500 people as of Wednesday evening.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the US, the number of confirmed coronavirus cases reached 1,000 Wednesday, with at least 32 people dead.
