{"id":2706,"date":"2020-04-24T08:47:23","date_gmt":"2020-04-24T01:47:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/illume-emag.com\/?p=2706"},"modified":"2020-04-24T08:47:49","modified_gmt":"2020-04-24T01:47:49","slug":"u-s-warship-sails-taiwan-strait-second-time-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lavyon.com\/en\/u-s-warship-sails-taiwan-strait-second-time-month\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. warship sails through Taiwan Strait, second time in a month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>A U.S. warship has sailed through the sensitive Taiwan Strait for the second time in a month, Taiwanese and U.S. militaries said on Friday, amid heightened tensions between Taiwan and China and as a Chinese aircraft carrier passes near the island.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">China, which considers Taiwan its own, has been angered by the Trump administration\u2019s stepped-up support for the island, such as more arms sales, U.S. patrols near it and a visit to Washington by Vice President-elect William Lai in February.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Taiwan\u2019s Defence Ministry said the U.S. warship had transited the narrow Taiwan Strait that separates the island from its giant neighbour China in a southerly direction and was continuing to sail south.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Taiwan\u2019s armed forces monitored the ship which it described as being on an \u201cordinary mission\u201d, the ministry added, without providing further details.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Lt. Anthony Junco, a U.S. Seventh Fleet spokesman, named the ship involved as the guided-missile destroyer USS Barry, and said it had conducted a \u201croutine Taiwan Strait transit\u201d in accordance with international law.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe ship\u2019s transit through the Taiwan Strait demonstrates the U.S. commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific. The U.S. Navy will continue to fly, sail and operate anywhere international law allows,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Two weeks ago the USS Barry also sailed through the strait, on the same day that Chinese fighter jets drilled in waters close to the democratically-ruled island.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Taiwan said on Thursday that a Chinese aircraft carrier group had sailed to its south through the Bashi Channel that sits between Taiwan and the Philippines and was heading east.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The carrier group earlier this month sailed down Taiwan\u2019s east coast.
