The southern Atlantic Ocean is home to Tristan da Cunha, a chain of islands in the top “most isolated” in the world. And recently, according to a project published in PNAS magazine, Tristan da Cunha is on the way to becoming the largest natural reserve on the planet.<\/p>\n

The project has a combination of the British government and many international organizations, with the aim of protecting natural life in Tristan da Cunha with a total area of \u200b\u200b687,247 km2. In addition, the entire sea area 3 times the size of the UK will become a “non-intrusive” area, absolutely forbidding fishing or damaging wildlife.<\/p>\n

In fact, Tristan da Cunha has a long history of exceptional habitat protection. It’s just this time that the islands will become the largest non-intrusive region in the Atlantic. Worldwide, this is the fourth largest non-intrusive area.<\/p>\n

This move was made by the government of Tristan da Cunha, to work with the British government to aim to protect 30% of the world’s oceans by 2030. The archipelago itself also really has many ideal conditions for a protected area, because it is 2,400km inland.<\/p>\n

“The Tristan community is committed to taking conservation seriously: on land, more than half of the territory is certified for protection. But the sea is an important resource, both for economy and for long-term survival. That is why we fully defend 90% of our waters, and we pride ourselves on being able to contribute to that conservation. “<\/em><\/p>\n

“The partners have helped Tristan da Cunha develop a marine protection strategy. Our relationship will be long term, to create a strong foundation for this project.”<\/p>\n
