August’s Most Popular US Travel Destinations

Although the unlucky emergence of the Delta variation has thrown one in four Americans’ August vacation plans off track, plenty is still planning getaways before the summer ends.

While hotel occupancy rates in the United States have recently decreased, certain places continue to attract a large number of search inquiries from prospective tourists.

The following are some of the most sought-after vacation locations this month, as determined by a Broady study based on Google’s most recent search data.

Las Vegas, Nevada

The self-proclaimed “Entertainment Capital of the Globe” has been doing all possible to safely reintroduce the shows, attractions, and live performances that drive visitors from all over the country and the world to Las Vegas.

With Resorts World Las Vegas opening in June as the Strip’s first new resort in almost a decade, there are lots of new activities to enjoy, including a large pool complex, over 40 new food and beverage options, a retail collection, nightlife venues, spa, and casino.

Additionally, a 5,000-seat theatre will feature Carrie Underwood, Celine Dion, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan. Other A-list acts such as Bruno Mars, Gwen Stefani, and Barry Manilow have all committed to returning to the Las Vegas stage.

New York City

Despite vaccine restrictions on many indoor activities, New York City is reviving tourism attractions, including the reopening of Broadway plays following a long hiatus. The 28th annual Charlie Parker Jazz Festival returns to Harlem on August 27-29, nightlife establishments such as Jay-40/40 Z’s Club have reopened, and Legoland New York Resort has opened to the joy of children and their families. Hotel prices are now lower than typical, according to hospitality data and analytics company STR. Thus far in August, the average daily rate for a hotel in New York City has been little more than $200, around $40 less than in 2019.

Los Angeles, California

Los Angeles, being the heart of the nation’s film industry and home to world-famous beaches, amusement parks, museums, zoos, parks, and other attractions, is certain to remain a traveler favorite. With travel restrictions lifted and more than half of people properly vaccinated, the Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board has begun a massive push to re-engage tourists. Popular theme park complexes such as Universal Studios Hollywood Resort and the neighboring Disneyland Resort, as well as Knott’s Berry Farm and Six Flags Magic Mountain, continue to attract a large number of visitors.

San Diego, California

San Diego, located south of Los Angeles, is recognized not only for its year-round mild weather and magnificent beaches, but also for its historic quarters, saltwater lagoons, and riparian fauna. Its abundance of outdoor activities, which include surfing, sailing, fishing, scuba diving, paddleboarding, as well as beautiful hiking trails, bicycling, parasailing, golfing, and horseback riding, contribute to its attractiveness. Several well-known theme parks and zoos, including Sea World San Diego, Legoland California Resort, and the world-famous San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park, are important tourism draws.

Chicago

Chicago is another city that is frequently mentioned. August brings a slew of activities to the city, including athletic events, festivals, parks, restaurants, and museums. Outdoor activities such as biking, swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, boating, and jet-skiing are available. Summer strolling destinations include the Navy Pier, which has events, free public programming, attractions, culture, eating, and shopping.

South Carolina’s Myrtle Beach

Myrtle Beach’s 60-mile-long Atlantic coastline offers several options for watersports, fishing, golfing, shopping, dining, and enjoying local amusement parks, water parks, casino cruises, nightlife, and live music venues. Additionally, there is a 1.2-mile coastal boardwalk that hosts festivals and events and is lined with retail stores and restaurants, creating a carnival-like atmosphere. Additionally, visitors to the region will experience abundant Southern friendliness and excellent seaside food.

Florida’s Orlando

Orlando consistently ranks high on visitor favorites lists, owing in great part to the presence of the Walt Disney World Resort, Universal Orlando Resort, SeaWorld Orlando, and Legoland Orlando. This summer, Florida eliminated capacity limitations and mask requirements and prohibited companies from requiring consumers to provide proof of COVID-19 immunization. Along with the unending sunlight, mild weather, and expansive beaches, this feature drew more people to Florida in the second quarter of 2021 than in the same period in 2019.
