China suspended the sale of frozen seafood and meat at the wholesale market that used to be the Covid-19 outbreak

Yesterday (November 26), China decided to suspend the sale and storage of frozen meat and seafood products at one of the largest wholesale markets in Beijing, once linked to the Covid-19 outbreak. This summer, in the context of Chinese authorities increasing inspection of imported frozen food.

Frozen meat and other frozen products are usually gathered at the Tan Phat Dia wholesale market located in a district south of Beijing. This market was the focal point of the Covid-19 outbreak in Beijing in June this year. Hundreds of market cold storage facilities have been disinfected and closed.

Although Beijing has not recently detected community infections related to the market or frozen products, there have been some workers handling imported frozen food shipments in 2 the cities of Qingdao and Tianjin were infected with Covid-19.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said that cases of virus detection on food packaging are very rare and unique. Many health experts are also cautious to question the true connection between food packaging and outbreaks saying that finding traces of virus on the surface does not mean that it will infect the epidemic.
