Director of top film franchise in Vietnam bravely breaks the mold in his latest installment: Face Off 7 – No villain, simply a wholesome family film

In his latest film, Ly breaks from the traditional protagonist/antagonist mold and throws out the villain.

Director Ly Hai made his first Face Off film (original Vietnamese: Lật Mặt) in 2015. It’s 2024 and he’s now on his 7th installment of the franchise. All helmed by Ly, each installment is a standalone, and each has exceeded the prior installment’s box office numbers, helping Face Off to become the longest and most successful film franchise in Vietnam.

In his latest film, Ly breaks from the traditional protagonist/antagonist mold and throws out the villain. The director’s gamble is paying off. Face Off 7: One Wish, written and directed by Ly Hai and produced by Minh Ha of Ly Hai production, is the most commercially successful film in the franchise, and is now the second highest grossing film of all time in Vietnam and still playing in its domestic theaters, proving “wholesome” works.

Face Off 7: One Wish is a feel-good family drama that follows the enlightening journey of Ba Hai, a 73-year-old widow who questions the meaning of family love after an injury forces her to depend on the care of her 5 busy adult children.
