“Miet Cu Lao”: Fashion Designer Nguyen Minh Cong Weaves Southern Delicacies into Stunning Couture

Vietnamese fashion designer Nguyen Minh Cong has successfully marked his ten-year career milestone with the sensational exhibition and fashion show, “Miet Cu Lao”. This event, which opened on October 15th at the Southern Women’s Museum in Ho Chi Minh City, serves as a deeply personal tribute to his Mekong Delta roots and childhood memories.

“Miệt Cù Lao” is a unique, multisensory cultural project that elevates Southern Vietnamese folk cakes (Banh Dan Gian Nam Bo) into spectacular haute couture. The collection of 20 sophisticated designs is an evolution of his 2021 mini-fashion collection, which previously set a national record. These concepts have now been realized into full-scale, wearable masterpieces that seamlessly merge cultural heritage with modern aesthetics.

The exhibition’s grand opening featured an exclusive show where seven representative pieces were showcased by a lineup of Vietnam’s top beauty queens and supermodels. Each garment is a detailed, handcrafted interpretation of a specific cake. Highlights included the voluminous, golden gown symbolizing “Banh Xeo” (Vietnamese Sizzling Cake) and the sleek dress adorned with embellishments for the “Banh Khot” (Mini Savory Pancakes).

The level of meticulous detail was apparent in every piece. Miss Nguyen Ngoc Kieu Duy shone in the “Bánh Lot” gown, a design dominated by white and pale blue tones where individual strands of the namesake noodle-like cake were painstakingly hand-beaded. Following this, Vice Miss Le Nguyen Ngoc Hang impressed audiences with the “Banh Đuc Gan” dress, which utilized complex pleating and diverse color coordination to create a multi-layered, visually striking effect, mimicking the cake’s appearance.

Youthful energy was brought by Vice Miss Nguyen Le Ngoc Thao in the “Banh Kep Trai Tim” (Heart Waffle Cake). As the only short, voluminous gown on the runway, it captured a contemporary beauty with heart-shaped details and a delicate color-shifting technique. Another breathtaking garment was the “Mut Dua” (Coconut Jam) dress, modeled by Vice Miss Pham Ngoc Phuong Anh. This piece featured a gradient of six colors, from pink to purple, with every detail inspired by the shredded coconut jam, executed through thousands of soft, twisted silk ribbons.

The runway concluded with a show-stopping design inspired by the “Banh Trang Re” (Woven Rice Paper Cake). Worn by vedette Miss Lương Thùy Linh, the gown featured layers of delicate lace skillfully shaped to mimic the soft curves and intricate, net-like structure of the dessert, embodying an ethereal elegance.

The exhibition itself is designed as an immersive journey with three main zones: the “Vung Ky Uc” (Memory Region) for design display; the “Bep Xua” (Ancient Kitchen), where guests can taste authentic folk cakes and teas; and the “Tuong Tac Van Hoa” (Cultural Interaction) workshop area. Nguyen Minh Cong shared that he hopes visitors “will not only admire the clothes but also feel the story, the spirit, and the love that I have poured into every design.”
