Record heavy rain caused at least 7 deaths to be washed away from France to Italy

Five of the seven bodies were discovered in northwest Italy, of which four were washed ashore between the towns of Ventimiglia and Santo Stefano al Mare (Italy), near the French border. Some bodies may have been washed ashore from France.

Meanwhile, the other two bodies plus the body of a shepherd dog were found in France. Another was discovered in a car swept away by flash floods from the village of Saint-Martin-Vésubie.

A total of 9 people died from heavy rains and strong winds in the border area of ​​the two countries on October 2. The French fire force said 21 people are still missing, eight of whom are missing due to the storm.

Bad weather caused millions of euros in damage as bridges were washed away in Italy and roads in some towns were affected by debris, mud and overturned cars.

According to the Piedmont (Italy) regional officials, they recorded a record 630mm rainfall in just 24 hours in Sambughetto, near Switzerland, more than double the average annual rainfall. In Limone Piemonte, a three-story house was washed into the river.

In the nearby village of Tanaro, the floodwaters destroyed the local cemetery and swept away dozens of coffins.

In France, nearly 1,000 firefighters were deployed to the Alpes-Maritimes area to search for the missing person and to resume communication. More than 24 elementary and middle schools in the area closed until further notice. On October 3, French Prime Minister Jean Castex said the rainfall reached 500mm in less than 10 hours, an unprecedented record.
