Retinol for beginners

We are sure you have heard through the internet, television, or from your friends about retinol being some magical anti-aging and skincare ingredient. The rumors are quite true, and it has been backed up by science too. If you want to try it out, ILLUME eMAG has some suggestions for where to start.

What is retinol?

Retinol is simply one of several forms of retinoids (the umbrella term for all vitamin-A derivatives, including retinol) available. There are several different types of retinoids, including retinyl palmitate (the weakest of the retinoids), retinol (the next strongest and most tolerated), retinaldehyde (even stronger), and adapalene (the strongest over-the-counter acne treatment). There are stronger retinoids available, but you should consult a dermatologist before using them. You’ll also find that retinol products come in different forms, most often as creams or serums.

The usage of retinol

Prevents Wrinkles: Retinol not only smooths your existing fine lines and wrinkles, but it also reduces the formation of new ones.

Brightens Dull Skin: Retinol exfoliates on a cellular level, revealing brighter, smoother, and, quite literally, newer skin.

Treats Acne: Retinol not only regulates oily skin, but also keeps pores from clogging, resulting in fewer blackheads, cysts, and pimples.

Fades Dark Spots: Over time, retinol will even out your complexion, fading sunspots, acne scars, hyperpigmentation, and dark spots.

How retinol work?

Before you hit 30s your skin turns over rate is every 28 days, which creates a fresh layer of skin. After that, the turnover rate increases to every 50, 60, or 70 days, which causes your face to look dry, dull, and wrinkled.

Retinol speeds up cell turnover, making your body create new skin at the same rate it used to. Because retinoids cause the skin to shed cells faster than normal, you’ll likely experience a few weeks of flakiness, dryness, irritation, and/or breakouts, until your skin gets through the adjustment period.

what should you choose to begin with?

We suggest starting with the gentlest of retinoids, like retinyl palmitate (for sensitive or dry skin) or retinol (for all other skin types), moving up to a higher strength formula only after a year. In addition, we recommend applying a cream for sensitive skin since it works as a buffer, soothing, hydrating, and cooling any discomfort upon application. A serum can penetrate the skin more rapidly and efficiently if you want to get right in. Another way is to check the retinol percentage. It is best for beginners to start with products that contain 0.25–0.5 percent of retinol.
