When Friends first aired in 1994, Jennifer Aniston’s hairstyle for her character, Rachel Green, came to define a generation. Aptly named The Rachel, girls everywhere flocked to salons to see if they could pull off the layered and highlighted shag cut.

Turns out, The Rachel has survived beyond the ’90s, as Selena Gomez’s new ‘do is proof. The Lose You to Love Me singer debuted her modern take on the epochal Friends style while guest-appearing on The Kelly Clarkson Show yesterday.

Marissa Marino, the Los Angeles–based hairstylist who gave the singer her new look, posted a snippet of Gomez’s appearance on her Instagram. “Selena on @kellyclarksonshow today! It’s a great interview so be sure to watch,” Marino wrote. “Hair inspo was ‘The Rachel’ meets Goldie Hawn in First Wives Club ????.”

Gomez complemented her voluminous hairdo with a sleek, long-sleeved black sweater and navy trousers with open slits. She also wore nude heels.

During her interview, Gomez spoke candidly about her music career. “I know that people may not think I’m the greatest singer,” she told Kelly Clarkson. “But I just work my ass off. And I really love writing and creating, and creating melodies and growing. I felt like this was my chance to say all of the things that I wanted to say.”
