The Fall 2021 Fashion Trends is the keyword nowadays.

It is now officially time to put away your sweatpants.

Designers have been operating in very unique conditions, operating in a vacuum, catering to an audience whose lives have been irrevocably altered—and eventually exhibiting their collections online or in extremely intimate settings. Nevertheless, inventiveness prevails. For autumn 2021, the collections embraced the new outdoor après-ski lifestyle, prepared for a new-wave Roaring ’20s, found stability in LBDs, and kept comfort at the forefront of enhanced knitwear. Discover what’s new for the next season in 13 trend articles.

She’s a Rich Girl

What happens when sequins are layered on top of sequins? The sort of 1920s-meets-1980s luxury that instantly lifts a girl’s spirits. The style is glistening but covered up (these are not party dresses; they are a mood statement)—think long pants, high necklines, coats, and voluminous dresses. Dries Van Noten, Paco Rabanne, Valentino, and Loewe, among others, eschewed simplicity in favor of something big and cheerful, sending a clear message: Let your light shine, women; the future is looking bright.

A Little Off Color

Saturated hues have made an appearance in the discussion. The color play is off-kilter, slightly distorted, and surprising—much like life. At Jil Sander, mustard meets lemon; at Miu Miu, bubblegum pink meets marigold; and at Patou, red meets lavender—complementary and secondary colors of the color wheel are muddled and topsy-turvy. All the more reason to look twice.

Tailored on Tailored

There is no other way to put it: the current trend in tailoring is nothing short of brilliant. That why it will become The Fall 2021 Fashion Trends Button-downs are layered under vests, over turtlenecks, beneath jackets, beneath long coats, and over trousers—they are sometimes belted and completed with a tie. These outfits are matched with loafers and boyish shoes rather than pumps or sneakers. In other words, this is not a subversion of great works; it is a faithful interpretation. Tory Burch, The Row, Prada, and Peter Do are leading the fight for women who like layering their loose tailoring—and then layering it again.

Knit Wits

If there is one lesson to be learned from the year 2020, it is that when given the choice, people will always pick comfort. Allow them to eat cake! Alternatively, save them from ever having to press a button and clothe them in luxurious knitwear skirts, maxi dresses, and two-piece sets. Cozy does not have to imply unpolished in the expert hands of Gabriela Hearst, Altuzarra, and Proenza Schouler, who are all providing cashmere and wools in endlessly appealing shapes suitable for an evening in or out.

Après-Ski, Please

Maintain control of your après-ski with Fair Isle knits that beg for a weekend in Aspen or Gstaad. Cropped or cardi-style, in traditional hues or vibrant pinks and reds, these warm knits make a statement. It’s statement sweater attire for the ski-in/ski-out lifestyle. Perhaps this is a reference to the inherent character of socially remote hills, or an acceptance of a mass migration to the countryside. Whatever way you look at it, next season is all about warm ski sweaters, according to Miu Miu, Chanel, Balenciaga, and Junya Watanabe.

Roaring ’20s Redux

If you believe that a new Roaring ’20s is on the horizon, you will be properly attired for the event. Flapper dresses abound in Khaite and Kwaidan Editions’ traditionally crafted silks and lace. Kim Jones’s new Fendi and Gabriela Hearst’s new Chloé provide more contemporary interpretations. At Miu Miu and Paco Rabanne, these nightie-inspired dresses are layered under long coats, while Coach takes a grunge-inspired ’90s approach.

Puff, Puff, Pass

The puffer coat is gaining popularity. These are not the traditional black puffers you’ve been wearing. They come in bright, loud hues like deep purple at Marni or red leopard at Dolce & Gabbana. They’re statement-making down pieces—in neutral super-long lengths at Rick Owens or on a Victoriana gown at Thom Browne—so you can take your choice and remain extra toasty all season. For that reason, they will become The Fall 2021 Fashion TrendsPuff, Puff, Pass - Source harpersbazzar
