Turkey – Greece earthquake update: At least 60 people died

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan announced that 58 people died in the coastal city of Izmir; Two teenagers were killed on the Greek island of Samos. Rescuers are still digging up the rubble of buildings destroyed by the earthquake.

About 20 buildings were destroyed in the Bayrakli district of Izmir province, Turkish officials said.

Earlier that same day, the Turkish Health Ministry announced, the earthquake also injured at least 896 people. About 5,000 people and 20 sniffing dogs participated in the rescue work.

According to the Kandilli Institute based in Istanbul, the earthquake on October 30, had a magnitude of 6.9; the epicenter is located in the Aegean Sea, northeast of the island of Samos.
