What to do when you have an unproductive day at work

While having an unproductive day at work is not very uncommon, here are a few suggestions for you to combat this in the near future.

1. Prioritize your needs

Sometimes work can get overwhelming, maybe there were too many tasks handed to you or you just cannot get yourself to focus. Do not worry, one way for you to ensure that progress is made is being able to prioritize and finish one task before the end of the day.

This will make sure that you did something productive during your time at work and from there you can build momentum to finish the rest of your work without any pressure. Getting your head in the right mindset can take time, but with perseverance and hard work, you too can be the person that you have envisioned in your head.

Prioritizing your needs can get a while to get used to when you first started out, always check your deadlines and see which task you should finish in the long run, and which task is urgent and need to be finished right on the spot so you won’t get overloaded with work.

2. Limit distractions

There are going to be many distractions when you are working, and if you have a short attention span, this can definitely be your Achilles heel. Social media can be one of the main reasons why you are distracted, who can really deny a good scroll on your favorite social media platforms?

But in order to limit yourself from these distractions at work, I suggest you use a website or an extension on your browser that works best for you and block these websites away. You can see that it will prevent you from wasting your time and focusing on finishing your work.

Another way that you can limit yourself from getting distracted while working is by putting your phone away so you cannot check or distract yourself from the notifications on your phone. Remember to also set boundaries for overtly chatty colleagues, nothing wrong with setting your boundaries to protect yourself from people, it is not a selfish act at all.

3. Plan for the future

Some people tend to downplay planning ahead of time because they fear that little or nothing will go as planned. However, that might be true in some circumstances, but there’s no harm in planning what you should do for the next day or in future times.

One of the first things you should do is to write down what you are going to do tomorrow. Writing down the tasks that you’re planning to do can enhance your workplace performance, because you do not have to think of what to do or which task that you should prioritize right on the spot, avoid getting yourself distracted and optimize your workflow.

The second thing that you should consider is setting a certain amount of time for you to finish a task. Preventing yourself from wasting or spending too much time on one thing so you can focus your energy on other tasks that you should do as well.

4. Don’t beat yourself up

It’s ok to have an unproductive day at work, one bad day at the job doesn’t determine you as a person. The important thing is you see your flaws and work on them so you do not have to face the same mistake again, or at least when you see it you know how to handle it better than the first time.

Keep in mind that getting some rest and a good night’s sleep can be vital to us as human beings so remember to rest well.
