10 Alcoholic Drinks Helps Weight Loss – Part 2

Which alcohol has the lowest calories?

It’s natural to want to unwind with a drink at the end of a long day, particularly if you’ve had one of those days. While there’s no shame in that game, it’s easy to lose sight of the liquid calories you’re consuming.

Unfortunately, they may quickly mount up, particularly if you drink often. And before you know it, you’ve destroyed your own healthy eating plan.

“Calories from alcohol may quickly mount up,” says Christy Brissette, MS, RD, owner of 80 twenty Nutrition. “And, since alcohol provides no nutrients or fills you up, these calories are typically in addition to what you’re already eating and drinking.” Drinking may also make you feel less constrained, making you more inclined to overeat, she claims.

While certain types of alcohol carry a significant amount of calories on their own (looking at you, triple sec), mixers are a major problem in all of this. According to Keri Gans, MS, RD, author of The Small Change Diet. “Many of the mixers we use in alcoholic beverages are rich in sugar and have little nutritional value,” she adds.

The good news is that you don’t have to substitute seltzer for wine every time you want to celebrate. Simply make better choices when it comes to what to drink.

“You can experiment with the component ratios to reduce calories in most beverages,” Beth Warren, MS, RD, creator of Beth Warren Nutrition and author of Secrets of a Kosher Girl, tells Health. She suggests experimenting with techniques such as adding additional ice or sparkling water, which has no calories, topping your drink with a fresh fruit juice with no added sugars rather than a heavy pour, and using a natural sweetener such as stevia instead of conventional sugar or syrup.

With that in mind, here are the lowest calorie alcoholic beverages you may offer, including simple variations on some popular favorites.

Light beer

Beer is often seen as the ultimate bloat-inducing beverage, but it may not be all that terrible. Researchers discovered that individuals who drank moderate quantities of beer had lower blood pressure than those who drank wine or spirits in a study of over 70,000 women. “Beers include a variety of B vitamins,” says Sass. “A 12-ounce beer also has more calcium, magnesium, and selenium, a vital antioxidant, than a glass of wine.” The standard version is closer to 160 calories per 12 ounces.

Because many beers do not disclose calories on their labels, Brissette suggests attempting this hack: “Look for a beer with an alcohol by volume of four and you’ll receive around 100 calories for a 12 ounce” drink.

Vodka soda

Sure, it’s simple, but if you’re in the mood for hard alcohol, a vodka soda may be the healthiest option. When you mix a shot of vodka with seltzer, you save extra calories—and a dreadful hangover. “Because it’s simply bubbly water, soda water, or club soda has no calories,” says Sass. “It hydrates and has no added sugars or artificial sweeteners, making it an excellent cocktail mixer. Furthermore, the bubbles may slow you down, preventing you from slamming the drink.”

Champagne

The criteria for selecting a lower-calorie Champagne are the same as for wine. “When selecting your champagne, keep in mind that ‘dry’ implies fewer sugar and calories,” Brissette advises. Look for the word “brut” on the label, which means “unsweetened” or “dry.”

Mojito

A mojito is a cocktail made with muddled mint leaves, rum, and soda water. You should aim for a six-ounce serving size with this one. Just keep in mind, according to Gans, that if you buy your mojito from a restaurant or bar, it may be a little larger. Paloma

Consider a Paloma to be the grapefruit lover’s margarita substitute. For a margarita-like flavor, it contains tequila, grapefruit juice, lime juice, and soda water. “This delightful cocktail is a lighter alternative to a margarita, which is usually prepared with a lot of agaves and/or a lot of sugar-sweetened bar lime,” explains Brissette. To save calories, drink fresh grapefruit juice rather than bottled.
