10 Alcoholic Drinks Helps Weight Loss – Part 1

Which alcohol has the lowest calories?

It’s natural to want to unwind with a drink at the end of a long day, particularly if you’ve had one of those days. While there’s no shame in that game, it’s easy to lose sight of the liquid calories you’re consuming.

Unfortunately, they may quickly mount up, particularly if you drink often. And before you know it, you’ve destroyed your own healthy eating plan.

“Calories from alcohol may quickly mount up,” says Christy Brissette, MS, RD, owner of 80 twenty Nutrition. “And, since alcohol provides no nutrients or fills you up, these calories are typically in addition to what you’re already eating and drinking.” Drinking may also make you feel less constrained, making you more inclined to overeat, she claims.

While certain types of alcohol carry a significant amount of calories on their own (looking at you, triple sec), mixers are a major problem in all of this. According to Keri Gans, MS, RD, author of The Small Change Diet. “Many of the mixers we use in alcoholic beverages are rich in sugar and have little nutritional value,” she adds.

The good news is that you don’t have to substitute seltzer for wine every time you want to celebrate. Simply make better choices when it comes to what to drink.

“You can experiment with the component ratios to reduce calories in most beverages,” Beth Warren, MS, RD, creator of Beth Warren Nutrition and author of Secrets of a Kosher Girl, tells Health. She suggests experimenting with techniques such as adding additional ice or sparkling water, which has no calories, topping your drink with a fresh fruit juice with no added sugars rather than a heavy pour, and using a natural sweetener such as stevia instead of conventional sugar or syrup.

With that in mind, here are the lowest calorie alcoholic beverages you may offer, including simple variations on some popular favorites.

Pared-down Margarita

Margaritas may be high in calories due to the usage of a lot of sugar and triple sec. Brissette adds that pre-made mixers may also be a problem owing to their high sugar content. To get around this, she suggests mixing fresh lime juice, tequila, and agave syrup over the rocks. “You’ll cut down on sugar and calories,” she adds.

Do you want to add some vitamins to the mix? Cynthia Sass, RD, a contributing nutrition editor at Health, suggests drinking avocado, mango, and orange juice to get a good dose of important vitamins and minerals that help prevent wrinkles and cancer. A demonstration may be seen in the video.

Gin & Tonic

A gin and tonic is a traditional combo, but each drink may contain up to 142 calories. Why? Tonic water is often prepared with high-fructose corn syrup, the same sweetener used in cola, and a 12-ounce can have eight teaspoons of additional sugar, according to Sass. Red wine

Yes, in moderation, alcohol, especially red wine, maybe part of a healthy lifestyle. But are you harming yourself by pouring too heavily? According to Sass, it’s all too simple and usual to drink too much.

However, adhering to the appropriate serving size of 5 ounces and drinking just one glass of wine at a time can help keep calories in check. “In terms of calories, it’s a decent option,” Warren adds. Brissette’s pro tip: Choose drier grapes like Sangiovese, cabernet sauvignon, and pinot noir. She points out that they are lower in sugar and calories.

Martini

According to Gans, portions are important in this case, just as they are with wine. “A typical vodka or gin martini contains approximately 120 calories—but that is if just a single shot of alcohol and around a third of an ounce of vermouth is involved,” she explains.

While martinis are famously strong, Brissette claims that this may be a positive thing in terms of calories. “Sipping such a powerful cocktail certainly means you’ll drink it more slowly than a sweeter drink prepared with juice or syrup,” she adds. If you want to add some flavor to the mix, she suggests adding a squeeze of lemon to impart a zesty flavor or making your drink filthy with a splash of olive juice—it only adds around five calories.

White wine

During this busy time of year, a glass of chilled white wine may be very refreshing but choose the kind wisely. Suss suggests that dry white wines, such as sauvignon blanc or pinot grigio, have reduced sugar content, which translates to fewer calories. Sweeter types, such as Riesling, may have closer to 165 calories per serving.

And, once again, serving size is important. You should aim for five ounces, which Gans describes as “a lower pour than most of us do.”
