Huge snowstorm raged in the US, New York declared a state of emergency

The National Weather Service (NWS) warned that the snowstorm, which caused more than 1.8 meters of snow and heavy rain in California last week, is moving east, according to the New York Times.

The NWS predicts heavy snowfall in major urban areas, from Washington DC to Philadelphia, New York City, and New England.

Snow falls the heaviest in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and can fall more than 45cm thick in some areas. Some major routes from Pennsylvania to Maine will be affected, according to the NWS.

At least 128 flights were canceled at Chicago, Illinois’ O’Hare International Airport while many were delayed due to weather conditions at Philadelphia International Airport.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio has declared a state emergency because of the storm, according to the New York Post. Residents were asked to stay indoors during the storm while travel restrictions began at 6 p.m. on February 1 (US time).

“This is a very dangerous storm” – Mr. de Blasio said. Only those who need medical treatment, buying necessities and workers in essential occupations such as frontline medical staff … are allowed to go to the streets.
