The reason why women are better at fighting Covid-19 than men

Illume – The protective instinct that comes from pregnancy and childbirth can help women develop a faster and stronger immunity.

The nCoV virus can attack anyone, regardless of age or gender. However, older men are more likely to become seriously ill than women of the same age.

Recently, immunologist Akiko Iwasaki, Yale University (USA) and colleagues have published a study on the Nature website on the immune system by gender. Accordingly, men produce a weaker immune system against the virus than women.

Therefore, men over the age of 60 may need more dependence on the vaccine to protect themselves against the possibility of Covid-19 infection.

The above conclusion is similar to previous studies on the male-female immunological difference faced by different challenges.

Women have a stronger and faster immune response than men, possibly because their bodies are used to fighting off threatening pathogens when they are pregnant or have just given birth.

However, over time, the immune system remains on high alert that can cause harm. Autoimmune diseases – an overly strong immune response – are more common in women than in men.

However, this study also has limitations when it is conducted on a small number of samples and all patients are over 60 years old. Therefore, it is difficult for scientists to evaluate how the immune response changes with age.
