We spoke with Dr. Geeta Grewal, Cosmetic Surgeon, and Wellness Expert at 9Muses Wellness Clinic in Gurugram, to find out how your emotions affect your skin:

1. Stress

Skin-to-skin contact has been researched for many years. Psychological stress-related skin problems are readily preventable if you are informed and have the proper tools. If you are under stress, your face will likely age quickly.

Stress is a major contributor to the creation of cortisol hormones, which in turn strain every organ, causing blood vessels to become more brittle, new skin cells to develop more slowly, and cell turnover to drop by half. It has also been found that when a person is stressed, that chocolate bar or pack of salty potato chips seems more appealing. Alcoholism can sometimes take control, resulting in decreased water consumption.

Many skin problems, including wrinkles and fine lines, are caused by dehydration. Acne can be caused by a combination of bad nutrition and a lack of skincare. Increased stress causes an increase in pro-inflammatory factors and inflammation in the skin, resulting in pigmentation, collagen and elastin breakdown, skin thinning, and the pulling up of dead cells on the skin’s surface, resulting in lackluster, dull, unhealthy skin with changed pigment Stress induces constriction of small blood vessels, resulting in a lack of blood flow, nourishment, and hydration to the skin.

2. Anger

Anger causes your facial muscles to tighten, which contributes to fine lines over time. Anger also has an impact on the skin’s inherent regeneration and healing process.

According to a study published in the journal Brain, Behavior, and Immunity, researchers discovered that healing and cell turnover took four times longer in furious people than in those who could manage their temper. People who become upset at the drop of a hat have high levels of cortisol hormones, which limit collagen formation, a critical component of skin repair and a cause of wrinkles when production stops.

3. Depression

These hormones disrupt sleep, resulting in large, puffy eyes and a pale or lifeless complexion.

4. Fear

When you are threatened or in danger, the brain signals the adrenal glands to release epinephrine, often known as adrenaline. As a result, your heart rate quickens, pushing blood to your body’s major power muscles in case you need a burst of energy to run quickly. Adrenaline also removes part of the blood from the skin and face and constricts blood vessels in the skin to regulate and minimize bleeding if injured. Fear of chemicals can make one appear pale and dull.

5. The way forward

We must strive to live a healthy lifestyle to get rid of our different bad emotions and skin concerns. We must stay hydrated, adhere to a rigorous skin and daily regimen, and abstain from addictions such as smoking and drinking.

Make an effort to connect with folks that exude positivity. Exercise daily since it increases Endorphins, the pleasant chemicals that assist one deal with stress and lessen sensations of pain. After all, laughing is the best treatment for any ailment!
