Why is refined oil harmful to your health?

Oil takes up a large portion of what we eat every day. With the numerous varieties of oil products that we have today, it is difficult to know which product is good for you. Many of us just pick whatever is advertised the best on TV, and a large part of it is refined oil. So, is refined oil good to eat?

What is wrong with refined oil?

Refined oils are vegetable, nut, or seed oils that have undergone extensive processing to improve shelf life. All pre-made oils are processed in some way using various extraction methods. Refined oils, on the other hand, are extracted using high heat and/or toxic chemical solvents and may be deodorized and bleached.

The oils are denatured during this process, resulting in trans-fatty compounds. Trans fats, or trans-fatty acids, are a kind of unsaturated fat. Doctors from all across the world agree that trans fats should be avoided. Artificial trans fats have been linked to an increased risk of heart disease. Many studies have linked trans-fat consumption to heart disease.

It also depletes the oils’ inherent vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, causing them to swiftly oxidize. This produces free radicals and contaminates them with hazardous waste.

How does it affect our health?

When we eat refined, rancid oil, free radicals are released, which cause inflammation and harm the integrity of our cells, while trans-fatty substances have a negative impact on our cardiovascular health. This is crucial to understand since chronic inflammation is at the basis of practically all chronic illnesses, from heart disease and cancer to Parkinson’s disease and dementia. Furthermore, the chemicals left over from the deodorization and bleaching processes put an extra load on our livers and other detoxifying organs. These oils are also high in pro-inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids, which can lead to a slew of additional health problems.
